How to photograph your dog
Published
When you photograph your dog, this simple act brings a whole new set of challenges.
First of all, dogs usually don't sit down and pose for a portrait. They simply don't stay still long enough for you to work out camera settings before taking the perfect shot. Dogs are just like children in that respect. Therefore, it is important that you know your DSLR camera and your limits inside out so that you can photograph your dog naturally.

Best camera settings for photographing your dog
One of the main problems photographers face when photographing their pets is that they usually move during the shot. This is where a digital camera setting called AI Servo AF comes into play.
AI Servo AF continuously refocuses on the subject while it is moving. After setting your camera to AI Servo AF (see manual), focus on your moving dog by pressing the shutter button halfway down. Keep the AF point (red dot visible through the viewfinder) on the dog and the focus will stay continuously sharp.
Many wildlife photographers also prefer shutter priority set to a speed fast enough to freeze a moving animal.
Others prefer sports mode. In sports mode, your camera decides which shutter speed is fast enough for the situation.
When photographing your dog, do not use flash. Your camera's flash can startle an unsuspecting pet. Therefore, it is not a good idea to set your camera to full auto where flash pops up automatically.

Composition tips
- Getting down to dog level is a great alternative to shooting from above. Looking down at your pet usually leads to unwanted top-down headshots.
- Getting down to eye level also allows you to fill the frame, preventing photos that look like they were taken from too far away.
- Choose your location carefully to capture the character or personality traits of your dog.
- If your dog is active, photograph them in the local park or on the beach. If they have a lazy personality, photograph them in their dog bed.
- Don't forget to have fun and encourage your pet to be playful. Dogs especially can be very playful, which leads to wonderful photos.
