A photographic year cannot be described by the number of productions alone. The range of situations the work moves between says far more.
Between a quiet interior and a full hall
A year can open with a calm interior frame and carry on a few days later in a packed event hall. It holds precise product shots, groups with many participants, travel, early call times, late stages and short windows of light.
Some of the work is published straight away, some of it appears only months later.
What belongs in a review
For a review of the year I would therefore not pick the biggest names alone. Pictures that show a new way of working, an unusual place or an unexpected situation matter just as much. Together they should convey how varied photography and film can be inside a single year.
An ending and a starting point
A review is both an ending and a starting point: it makes visible which subjects keep coming back, which new directions have opened up, and which stories can be carried on next year.
