A concept portrait built from a single idea: the face sits behind a wreath of turquoise-dyed chrysanthemums, with only the eyes and a strip of glittered skin left visible. Everything in the frame is tuned to the same blue, down to the iris. Set-ups like this only work up close — the flowers have to sit near enough to the lens to go soft and still read as a frame.
The whole picture is a close-up. The blossoms sit so near the lens that they turn into surfaces, and the only sharp things are lashes, lid edges and iris. What is out of focus still has to read as a flower — which is why the front petals are layered rather than flat.
Turquoise is the hardest color in a portrait, because next to skin tone it quickly looks unwell. It works here because the skin was taken along with it: glitter on the cheeks, a blue in the iris, no warm fill against it.
In a picture like this a color decision never stops at the background. It reaches make-up, prop and gaze at the same time, or it stays a filter over a portrait that would have looked the same without it.
