Studio Tuesday in Frankfurt — a Pilates studio with its own kitchen, and both belonged in one set. What was photographed: the reformers in a row under the exposed concrete ceiling, the shopfront with its projecting PILATES sign and the waiting chairs on the pavement, the counter with bowls at lunchtime, bowls from above with beetroot, lentils and herbs, and the quiet corner with a strelitzia and black chairs.
A place running two businesses in one room needs pictures that explain both without either looking like a back room. The shopfront frame does that in a single image: above the door the projecting PILATES sign, flat on the wall to the left the board reading breakfast, lunch and coffee, and the neon from inside reflected in the glass. Two signs, one building — which saves every word of explanation.
Inside, equal standing is created through treatment. Studio and kitchen get the same daylight, the same white floor, the same camera height. The moment one area is photographed warmer or tighter than the other, it reads as the appendage — and for this concept that would be wrong.
The room knows three colors: concrete gray, white and black. For interiors that is a gift and for food a problem, because all the color has to come from the plate. So the bowls are shot from above with beetroot and lentils as the strongest points, and the white table around them is left empty.
And the quiet corner with the strelitzia is not a filler. A business selling fifty-minute slots needs one frame in its set where nothing is happening — otherwise the whole place reads as being on a clock.
