Event documentation of the family festival Festival4Family. The day is spread across the whole site and the set follows it: the stage with hundreds of children's arms in the air, a child at the drum kit in stage light, mascots from Paw Patrol to Peppa Pig on the grass, the children's stands with their oversized figures, a boy under a VR headset, the ADAC rescue helicopter on its low-loader, a giant Connect Four and the painted children's train.
What a client mostly needs from a day like this is evidence: every attraction that was advertised has to appear in the material. So the site is not wandered but worked through — a list, point by point, and only afterwards does the free shooting begin. Start the other way round and you finish the evening with three hundred lovely pictures and none of the helicopter.
With children, height is half the job. The boy in the train is photographed at his own eye level, through the open window of the painted cab. From above it would be a picture of an adult watching a child; at his height it is his moment, and the ride around him becomes the frame.
Mascots need the opposite treatment. A costume has no face and no expression, so posture decides — the three on the grass are photographed while waving and turning towards each other. Standing still side by side, they read as three costumes.
And one rule that outranks everything else at a family festival: children's faces are not collected in passing. The pictures are made where the event provides for it and where the accompanying adults are present — for everything else, movement, backs, hands and the attraction itself carry the frame just as well.
