Conference photography for the DIIR's 4th convention at the Dorint Hotel Frankfurt/Oberursel. The half-timbered building supplies the setting a professional conference does not usually have: a jazz trio with double bass, archtop guitar and trumpet on the terrace, standing tables in the courtyard, delegates talking in front of the timber façade. Inside, the opposite — a full hall, a screen, a lectern.
The set has to hold both together, because the association promotes both: the program and the place. Photograph only the hall and you deliver pictures that could come from any conference; photograph only the terrace and you deliver a hotel brochure. So the delivery is ordered alternately — hall, courtyard, hall, terrace — so that neither part reads as an appendix when someone scrolls through.
The trio on the terrace is the frame with the narrowest window. They play at blue hour, the musicians standing in the last light of the sky with the hotel façade already lit behind them. Ten minutes earlier the sky would be white; ten minutes later the three would be silhouettes against a bright wall. The exposure goes on the faces and the windows behind are allowed to glow.
Musicians are also not photographed during the break. The bassist with his eyes closed, the trumpeter mid-phrase — those are the two seconds in which three men in suits become a trio. For that you stand still and wait out the number.
And the standing tables in the courtyard belong in the documentation even with nobody at them. An association promoting the same conference the following year needs the picture of the prepared place at least as badly as the one of the full hall.
