In 2023 the prestigious Frankfurt International Trophy, a renowned wine tasting event, was held in the picturesque Palmengarten in Frankfurt am Main. The event drew wine connoisseurs and experts from around the world to present and taste an impressive selection of international wines. Located in the heart of Frankfurt, the Palmengarten with its idyllic setting offered the perfect backdrop for an event celebrating the diversity and quality of global wine production. Participants had the unique opportunity to discover a wide range of wines, from established estates to emerging new growers. The Frankfurt International Trophy 2023 set new standards in the wine world and encouraged exchange between growers, merchants and lovers of fine wine.
What separates this set from the tasting itself is the people. What was photographed is not the rows of judges at work but the hours either side: three participants with glasses in hand, in conversation, the hall with its globe lights behind them, and in the foreground the out-of-focus glasses of the next table.
That soft foreground is the method. A wine event with no glasses in frame could be any conference; a frame full of glasses with no people is a still life. The answer lies between the two — two or three bowls directly in front of the lens, shot wide open, so they stand as bright shapes without hiding the faces behind them.
The globe lights in the background are not a lucky find but the reason for this standpoint. They sit exactly at head height behind the group and give the picture a row of bright points in the depth. Without them the wall behind would be a gray surface and the three faces would have nothing to separate from.
The exposure goes on the skin, not on the wine. White wine in a glass is a bright patch that blows easily — but a slightly hot glass is forgiven and a burnt-out face is not. With people the order of priorities is always the same.
And all three laughing was not an instruction. At a tasting people talk, compare and disagree; stand at a table long enough and you get the moment a group turns towards itself, without anyone having to ask.
