Bama Music Awards event photography
Event photography at the Bama Music Awards: pictures from the award show. The 2017 Bama Music Awards. The trophy goes up, the light is still on the stage…
The 2017 Bama Music Awards. The central frame is the moment after the announcement: the winner alone in the stage light, the trophy held over his head in both hands, the backdrop with the event name and the band in silhouette behind him. Award shows move fast and do not repeat — the handover, the celebration and the group shot have to be right first time.
The moment after the announcement lasts two seconds. The trophy goes up, the light is still on the stage, and nobody knows in advance which way the winner will turn — so the focus goes on the middle rather than on a person.
An award show does not repeat itself. Handover, cheer, group picture: if one of them is missing it is missing for good, and no restaging afterwards looks like the evening itself.
Stage light from behind turns it into an exposure question as well. The band against the light becomes a silhouette, the winner’s face stays dark unless you expose for him — and the trophy shines exactly when everything else is right.
