A Bain & Company event in Berlin. The frame shows the start: a participant holding up his group’s numbered sign — "11 Spree Boat Trip" — at the landing stage, the water and the ship’s bell behind him. In a format that splits into groups across a city the sign is not incidental: it is the only way the pictures can be sorted afterwards.
Holding a numbered group sign up to the camera is the simplest documentation there is, and for a format with many groups the most important. It later assigns hundreds of pictures to a group without anyone having to write names down.
So a frame like that is made at the start rather than somewhere in the middle. At the jetty everyone is still together; an hour later the same people are spread across the city and cannot be got into a picture at all.
For the rest, distributed formats come with a choice: follow one group or touch on many. Both are valid, but it has to be decided in advance — afterwards either the depth or the breadth is missing.
