The SenSaSion Bar in Frankfurt, photographed before opening. The room lives on its materials: columns shot through with rust red, a wall of aged brass carrying the logo, velvet armchairs in teal and sand, marble tables, and a row of globe pendants under the ceiling. Bar photography is the business of making an empty room feel occupied — here through the arrangement: every chair sits as though somebody had just pushed it into place.

The room has two families of color and lives on the opposition: rust and brass on columns and wall, teal and sand on the chairs, plus marble tables and a row of globe lamps with visible filaments above the counter.

Those lamps are the hardest part of the room to expose. They are point sources, they sit in the middle of the frame and they are many times brighter than anything else — let them blow out and the chain that gives the room its rhythm is gone.

So the work happens before opening and on a tripod. An interior like this needs long exposures for the walls to keep their detail, and time is the one thing an empty bar has plenty of.
