Photographic documentation for Lebenshof Anamcara, a sanctuary for rescued animals. It was shot on a dry late-summer evening out in the field: Shetland ponies against the light over yellow grass, a pot-bellied pig at the fence, a cat on a stone among the plants. The animals here have time, and it shows — these are not adoption pictures but portraits of animals with nowhere left to be moved on to.
The frame that carries the set is a pony grazing into the light. A pale dun with a long, almost white mane stands knee-deep in dry grass, head down; behind it the sun sits low over a line of trees and lays a rim of light along the mane, the back and the tail.
Backlight is the harder of the two options with a pale animal, and the only right one: lit from the front, the coat would be a white surface without modelling. This way every single hair gets an edge and the animal separates from the dark ground without any cutting out. The price is that the exposure has to be set for a face in shadow.
