Hotel photography at the Kempinski Hotel Soma Bay on the Red Sea in Egypt. In the desert the sun stands almost vertical, which confines exteriors to two short windows in the day and puts the interiors between them. The set shows rooms, grounds and beach.
The establishing frame is made at sunset, and it shows why: the resort is built in ochre — domes, arcades, round arches — and ochre needs warm light or it turns gray. In the foreground the pool landscape with its bridges and rock formations, behind it the building, to the left the Red Sea with palms, the mountain ridge on the horizon, and above it a sky in orange.
A panorama like this has a window of a few minutes: while the sun is still above the ridge the foreground drowns; once it is below, the resort has no light. What is caught is the moment in which both hold their detail at once.
