Hotel & Restaurant Zwei Mohren
A long-established hotel and restaurant on the Rhine. Hotel photography: Assmannshausen on the Rhine. The series works through the room types, and here…
Guest rooms in a traditional house in Assmannshausen on the Rhine. The series works through the room types, and here they differ markedly: yellow walls with an exposed timber beam under the sloping ceiling, a room in green, one in lavender with rosé armchairs by the window. On the desk stands a bottle of Riesling with two glasses — the clue to where you are.
A house with many different rooms needs one visual language across all of them, or the booking pages fall apart. If every room has a different wall color, it must not also have a different angle: same height, same focal length, bed always from the same side. Only that repetition makes the differences between yellow, green and lavender legible — otherwise seven rooms look like seven different hotels.
The timber beam crossing the room is not an obstacle but this room's selling point. It is not cropped away but given space: the camera stands so that the beam runs diagonally through the frame and the white duvet below is not cut by it.
The suitcase and the leather jacket on the bedpost are placed deliberately and do not belong to the room. They show that somebody has arrived, and they give the foreground a dark mass that anchors the bright yellow. Without them it would be a clean room and nothing else.
The bottle of Riesling is the smallest and most effective decision in the series. A hotel room in Assmannshausen looks like one in Kassel; the bottle with a label from the region says in a single detail which place you are waking up in.
