Model Bianca, studio photography

Fashion and beauty photography in the studio: an editorial with the model Bianca. Two beauty portraits with Bianca, deliberately set against each other.

Two beauty portraits with Bianca, deliberately set against each other. The first against a mottled dark ground, warm rim light from the right, red lipstick, a black blouse — classic and high contrast. The second bright on beige, one shoulder bare, a darker lip, every freckle visible. Beauty photography is judged on skin: the light has to be soft enough for an even fall-off and hard enough to hold the eyes and the mouth.

In the first frame the light comes from the side and lets the far half of the face fall into shadow. The background is a mottled paper with just enough structure not to read as empty and too little to compete.

Beauty work means hiding nothing. The red mouth is the only accent of color and takes the eye at once — whatever sits next to it has to be right, because it will be looked at.

The second version turns everything around: bright surface, little contrast, a dark lip. A beauty session rarely delivers one version but a pair — which of the two carries is decided by the layout it later stands in.
