Your imagination knows no bounds when you take beautiful pictures. Everything is possible. For example, through professional hair styling and perfect photo make-up, natural daily make-up is transformed into a complete type change.
The series shows how wide that arc is: an orange mouth with coral shadow against neutral gray, a teal-and-gold eye against ochre, a portrait in violet rim light against charcoal, and a frame in white on white with a feather headpiece and silver dots across the skin.
The background here is not a curtain, it is part of the make-up. The ochre is chosen because it repeats the hair and sits directly opposite the teal lid. The gray is chosen so the mouth stays the only color in the frame. And the white is chosen because at that point nothing carries the picture except skin, eyebrows and the shadow the feathers throw. Decide the backdrop color last and you have thrown away half the look.
Beauty is the closest crop portrait photography has, and that is why the light has to be softer than for a classic portrait: at this distance a shadow has nowhere left to sit unnoticed. The dark half of the series works the other way round — there the color comes from a gelled light behind the model and models the shoulder and cheek in one narrow edge. Both are beauty pictures, and the two lighting set-ups are not interchangeable.
In every one of these frames a hand rests at the chin, the cheek or above the head. That is not decoration. A hand gives the face a line to lean against, and it gives the model something to do when the camera is close enough that every idle second shows.
The retouching follows one rule: texture stays, distraction goes. Pores, fine hairs and the sheen on a cheekbone are what makes a beauty picture real; what disappears is what would have gone by tomorrow anyway.
