Practice photography for a doctor’s surgery in a period building. The rooms face the street and look onto the façade opposite, and that window light carries the set: the waiting room with chairs along the windows, the consulting room with its desk and blue couch, the cherry-wood reception counter, and the treatment room with an ergometer and examination bay. Consulting rooms are usually tight and lit with fluorescent tubes; both have to be compensated for so the place reads as welcoming rather than clinical.
The waiting room shows why the windows carry this set: the light comes in broad from the side, the neighboring façade stands in sunlight outside, and the room stays bright without a single lamp being switched on.
Photographing a practice is also a question of discretion. There are rooms where nobody may appear, papers that have to leave the counter and screens that have to be switched off — half the preparation is clearing.
So the work happens outside consulting hours. An empty treatment room does not read as cold when it is tidy and warmly exposed; it reads cold only when fluorescent light and daylight argue about the color in the same frame.
