Group formats in Frankfurt

Photo walks & workshops in Frankfurt

Outside, in a group, in the right light. I take you to where Frankfurt turns into a picture in the evening and show you how I work there: where I stand, what I wait for and what I leave out.

The idea

Learning to see, not buttons

In one-to-one coaching we work through your questions. In a group it is about something else: seeing. Several people in the same place, in the same light, come back with very different pictures — and that is where most of the learning happens.

I plan these formats the way I plan my own work: light first, then the place, then the camera. Frankfurt suits that well, because water, glass, the old town and the towers sit so close together that a single evening holds several worlds of pictures.

There are no slides and no syllabus to tick off. There is a route, a time of day and the question I ask myself before every exposure: what should this picture leave out?

The formats

Three formats, one idea

Each format is described as a plan: duration, group and level adapt to you in the end.

Blue hour on the Main

We walk along the Main from the Westhafen to the Alte Oper and time the route so that each stop gets its best light: the harbor basin in the last warm light, the Eiserner Steg in the minutes when sky and windows are equally bright, the old town under its lanterns. Along the way it is less about settings than about decisions.

Duration
About 3 hours, from golden hour into the night
Group
4 to 8 people
Level
All levels, a tripod helps

What you take home

  • Long exposures from a tripod, without guesswork
  • Setting white balance deliberately in mixed light
  • A small series of three pictures that tell one evening together
  • The route, to walk it again on your own

Reading light

First without equipment: we look at where the light in a street comes from, how it bounces off a wall and what an archway does to a face. Then one flash joins in, off camera — enough to understand when it helps and when it ruins the picture. You photograph each other.

Duration
About 4 hours
Group
3 to 6 people
Level
Intermediate: you shoot in manual

What you take home

  • Seeing light before you raise the camera
  • Available light: shadow, bounce, backlight
  • Using an off-camera flash with confidence
  • Two portraits of the same person, one in available light and one with flash

From picture to look

A look is a decision, not a filter. We take your pictures from the walk or from your archive and work out what holds them together: color, contrast, how deep the shadows may go. The examples are the looks from my own work that exist as LUT collections — and the point where every LUT stops and handwork begins.

Duration
About 3 hours, in person or online
Group
3 to 8 people
Level
All levels, with Lightroom

What you take home

  • A look of your own as a Lightroom preset
  • Keeping color and contrast consistent across a series
  • When a LUT helps and when handwork does
  • A series that looks like it belongs together

A route

From the Westhafen to the Alte Oper

This is how the route for “Blue hour on the Main” can run: five stops, about 3.5 kilometers, each one placed where its light is at its best. Pick a stop.

Schematic, not to scale. The Main flows from right to left.

Best light: Blue hour

What you photograph there

The classic view across the Main to the towers, with the love locks on the railing as foreground. This is where we stand for the few minutes when sky and windows are equally bright.

How

Tripod, low ISO, an aperture around f/8 and exposures of several seconds. A bracket gives you room if a boat passes.

I deliberately show no picture of this stop here: it is yours to see first.

Dates

Dates on request, for your group or as a company event

There are no fixed dates. Each format takes place when a group asks for it: friends, a photo club, a team. We set the day by the light — in Frankfurt the blue hour falls in the late afternoon in December and around ten in the evening in June, and everything else follows from that.

As a company event it becomes an evening in which a team looks at something together instead of sitting together: a route through the city, one task per stop and a shared selection of the pictures at the end. Team building you can hang on the wall afterwards.
