A summer evening at the Lorsbacher Thal, on film

The Lorsbacher Thal has the fittings of a traditional tavern: dark wood, long rows of tables, brass lamps, framed pictures on the walls. For the trailer “Ein Sommerabend daheim im Lorsbacher Thal” that room was the starting point.
The film opens before the doors do, in the empty dining room. That is the moment when the hand of the house is clearest: every table laid, the lamps setting warm islands into a dark room, the architecture visible before service covers it up.
The darkness belongs to the house
The low light level of the room was not evened out. It is the character of the place: a tavern lit uniformly bright looks like a canteen with wooden paneling.
Instead the lamps stay the light sources they are. Between them lie darker zones, and it is exactly that alternation that gives a viewer the sense of warmth and closeness.
At the eye level of a seated guest
The camera stays low. It sits roughly where the eyes of a person at the table are, rather than where a photographer standing up would work comfortably.
The difference shows in the finished frame: from standing height you look down on a room and sort it; from seated height you are in it. For a film meant to suggest an evening, the second is the right position.
A way in, not a tour
An advertising tour shows everything and explains nothing. This trailer does the opposite: it shows little, but long enough for a mood to form.
For a house whose value lies in its atmosphere rather than in a list of fittings, that is the fitting form. Anyone who has seen the film does not know how many covers it seats — but they know how an evening there begins.
