Whether at 12,000 meters aboard a Boeing 747, out on the open sea aboard a cruise ship, or surrounded by 1,200 VIPs in the glittering deep snow at the KitzRaceParty in Kitzbühel – the moment KKCB take the stage, the party atmosphere is transferred to everyone present as if by magic!
The performance photographed here was in Le Grand Mello in France — which means conditions that have nothing to do with a concert hall. A room with carved panelling, a wooden atlas figure beside the stage, warm wall lights and one blue spot running across everything from the side. There is no truss rig to exploit and no three-song grace period: the evening starts at full volume.
The frame of the singer keeps the flight cases in the picture. That is deliberate. A band on tour plays in a room that keeps its own furniture, and baroque carving next to black road cases tells exactly this evening. Cropped away it would be a stage photograph from anywhere.
The blue detail of the bass is the counterweight — hands, strings and pickguard, no face. A band set in which only the person at the microphone appears is worthless to the rest of the musicians. Every member needs at least one frame, and if the light will not give you faces, then it has to come through the instrument.
Blue is the one stage color you can actually work with. Unlike magenta it can be pulled back without tipping the whole room — and where it stays too strong, the frame is developed towards the instrument rather than the skin tone.
There is no flash. Use flash at a party band gig and you become part of the show instead of its observer, and from the second frame onwards the guests look into the camera. High-ISO grain is the price for that, and it is the right one.
