A travel report from Dubrovnik for THE FRANKFURTER. The aerial shows a hotel stepping down the cliff in terraces: rows of rooms like an amphitheater, pools and sun decks below them, the open sea beneath. A heavily visited coast can only be photographed without crowds at either end of the day, which largely determines how a trip like this is planned.
The resort is built as an amphitheater, and from the air that becomes visible: room terraces in tiers, a lawn in front of them, pool and sun deck at the cliff edge below, the open sea behind. From the ground that shape cannot be shown at all.
For a travel magazine that is where the value of an aerial sits — not in the height but in the plan. A building whose idea you grasp from above in a second sells itself through that one picture.
The hour decides the tiering. With the sun too high the shadows disappear that make the tiers read as tiers, and the pool turns into a white surface.
