A film about the Kaffeehaus Goldene Waage in Frankfurt’s reconstructed old town. The shot everything starts from is the terrace in the morning: red chairs and parasols on the square, the red sandstone arcades and half-timbered façades of the rebuilt row behind them, not a guest in sight. A coffee house lives on sequence — the film tells it through preparing, serving and sitting rather than through separate views.
The façade carries the frame on its own: red sandstone arches with gilded lattice in the round windows, and above them a row of timber framing in red, yellow and blue. A building with that much color needs no more of it in the picture — the parasols are cream, the paving gray, and everything red in the foreground is the red of the chairs.
That one repeated color is what holds the shot together. Red rattan in front of red sandstone is two materials in a single color, and that is what carries a frame in which nothing else is happening.
Filming before opening has two reasons. A coffee house shows its order then — every chair where it is meant to be, every table free. And a film that begins on an empty square still has the filling of it ahead: the rest of the day is the movement this first shot is missing.
