An event film for Club Culinar, a gourmet format for invited guests. The room is darkened, the club’s logo standing on a starfield on the screen, the guests at laid tables in front of it. A culinary event demands two perspectives at once — the kitchen where the work happens and the table where the result arrives.
A darkened hall with a lit screen is an exposure decision with only one right answer: the screen is brighter than everything else, and drawing detail in it costs you the tables. So the exposure goes on the guests and the logo is allowed to run bright.
In the kitchen the opposite applies. It is bright, tight and hot, people are working rather than waiting, and the camera is in the way the moment it stops — kitchen frames are made in passing, with your back to the wall.
What holds the two sides together is the plate. It leaves the kitchen in a state it will not have two minutes later, and it arrives at the table in a light that has nothing to do with the kitchen’s — both belong in the same film.
