Felix Jaehn’s Breath Club Tour at the Gibson Club in Frankfurt. The frame that carries the night is not the booth but the room: hundreds of arms against the stage lights, haze, white beams cutting across the hall. A DJ set gives a photographer very little as long as you only show the artist — the show comes from the lighting, the crowd, and the view from the booth into it.
The view from the booth into the crowd is the frame that makes a DJ set tellable at all. It shows what the artist sees, and it turns one person behind a machine into an event with hundreds of participants.
The haze is not an effect but a precondition. Without it beams are invisible and the light show exists only as color on faces; with it the same beams become lines that draw the room.
Photographically a club is the hardest exercise: little light, constant movement, and a lighting desk programmed to the beat rather than to the camera. You work with the rhythm instead of against it — the shutter follows the music.
