The 8 Best Things to Do in Santorini

The 8 Best Things to Do in Santorini

Published

In every holiday destination and city, there are a few things you should experience after you leave. This also applies to Santorini, a small Greek island with around 17,000 inhabitants. Even if you don't expect it, you can easily get lost without proper planning. That's why I'd like to give you some tips on what to do when exploring one of the most beautiful islands in the world!

Explore Fira on Foot

Fira is the heart of Santorini and can be quite busy as many cruise ships dock daily at the port to pick up and drop off tourists. You may have seen pictures of Fira's iconic white buildings perched dramatically on the edge of the volcanic cliffside. You should definitely take a visit and explore this beautiful area. Over time, Fira has merged with Firostefani and Imerovigli, which you can easily reach on foot from Fira. Here you can ride the cable car down to the famous port, visit the Catholic Cathedral of St. John, or simply enjoy the spectacular view over the sea and the caldera from one of many authentic restaurants and cafes.

Experience the Sunset in Oia

Featuring the most beautiful sunset on the island, we highly recommend Oia, arguably the most famous town and top attraction in Santorini. The small port of Oia, called Ammoudi, does not host cruise ships, yet many visitors come here to capture photos of the gorgeous sea views and iconic blue domes of the white buildings. There are only about 230 steps leading down to the port, so if you have time, take a closer look! The tavernas in Ammoudi also serve fresh seafood that you must try. Visiting the local castle ruins is a great idea if you want to get a sense of historic Greece. Afterward, grabbing a coffee with a view is a wonderful way to spend your final hour here at a reasonable price, even though Oia is generally more expensive than Fira.

Rent an ATV / Quad

ATVs (quad bikes) have become a very popular mode of transportation in Santorini, even though many places can easily be explored on foot. However, steep hills and mountainous roads can get quite exhausting. You can comfortably ride with a passenger for around €30 per day. Since locals use ATVs frequently too, feel free to ask them for recommendations on the best rental shops! With a quad bike, finding parking is effortless, and navigating narrow island roads is much easier than driving a car.

Visit the Archeological Sites of Akrotiri and Ancient Thera

Greece is filled with ancient ruins, but the top archaeological sites to see in Santorini are Akrotiri (with the Faros lighthouse nearby) and Ancient Thera, located atop the 370-meter mountain Mesa Vouno. Akrotiri is very popular due to its sheltered indoor biome protecting visitors from the heat. Ancient Thera offers a stunning historical site paired with breathtaking panoramic views over the sea, Kamari, and Perissa. Reaching Ancient Thera involves a short uphill hike, but the rewarding views make it one of the absolute best things to do in Santorini.

Experience the Red Beach

While visiting Akrotiri, we highly recommend taking a short walk over to the famous Red Beach ("Paralia Kokkini"). The beach takes its name from the towering red volcanic lava cliffs that frame the shoreline. While not a typical soft sand beach, its dramatic red rock formations and crystal turquoise waters make it an extraordinarily unique sight. Many visitors love swimming here, so be sure to bring proper swimwear!

Explore Pyrgos Kastillis

The village of Pyrgos is the highest settlement on the island, offering breathtaking views and picturesque winding alleys. While the front section of Pyrgos feels modern, the upper historic village remains peaceful and untouched, making you feel as if time has stood still. A leisurely stroll through Pyrgos Kastillis reveals a charming, authentic side of Santorini away from the main crowds.

Relax on the Volcanic Beach of Perissa / Perivolos

Perissa and Perivolos beach is famous for its unique black volcanic sand and crystal-clear Aegean waters. Lined with cozy beach bars, seaside tavernas, and sun loungers, it is the ideal spot on the island to relax, swim, or try out water sports.

Try Local Drinks & Refreshments

The cafes and bars across Santorini offer everything from espresso to cold refreshments and gelato. We especially recommend trying local smoothies and fresh fruit shakes while relaxing with caldera views. Island cafes masterfully combine local fruits, nuts, and fresh juices to create delicious signature drinks you shouldn't miss!
